A friend who's travelling and living in another country sent me a message today asking what it is that I miss most when I'm travelling or away from home, apart from my family. It's probably one I should post in the forums to be chewed over, but I was initially set to thinking that the trick is to define home. But then home can probably be anywhere can't it if you choose to make it so, so in the context of this question I think of home as the place I know best.

Most of all I think I miss the feeling of knowing what time of year or day it was from the air, the weather, and the colour of the sky. This is something you feel and understand by instinct because over many years your body naturally tells you things. When you don't have this natural reflex, you feel a bit dislocated. If you live somewhere long enough, you come to learn what is going on around you and to feel instinctively at ease with your surroundings and norms. I don't mean that wow factor of finding a place you love to be on holiday, but somewhere that maybe seems unsurprising, because you instinctively make your comparisons against that standard because it defines "normal" for you at that point in your life.

Maybe if you're reading this you know exactly what I mean, or maybe you had a similar experience but the things you miss are different? The weather thing could be a peculiarity of the British of course!!
