The night before I'd been walking home from the snooker club with my dad when it started. I was so cold I had a headache and my fleece jacket looked like it belonged on a snowman. So what, this is the south of England, it never snows much here I thought. How wrong I was! I awoke this morning to a lot of light coming through the blinds and a strange silence. There was snow everywhere and a lot of it, muffling the noises of a town getting ready for the Christmas Sales shopping - for this muffling I'm very thankful to the snow indeed!

Somehow, I was out in the garden in my flipflops later that morning, putting out seeds, nuts and lard for the birds. I don't know how it was me, or why I was wearing flipflops but I do distinctly remember a lot of snow falling off the honeysuckle and straight down my neck!

Compared with the balmy warmth of my previous winter in China this was a pleasant change. I've only seen this much snow a handful of times in my life and now the snow, just for a couple of days was absolutely beautiful and undisturbed during the holiday season. If only we could have instant melt snow and skip that horrible grey, black slushy stage it would be wonderful but I guess that's wanting to have my cake and eat it!
