Christmas is great because it's a time when you're almost guaranteed that family and friends will have free time to meet or just to talk and relax. The country comes to a relative standstill. However, I hate the rest of it! All the long protracted build up, commercial bombardment, obsessions with consuming excessive amounts of food, alcohol and "gifts" is grotesque and gets on my nerves.

When I was away from the UK I didn't miss Christmas until maybe a week before. Now, I'm surprised to find myself looking forward to it almost 3 weeks in advance. It's amazing how time and distance change the perspective. Although Glasgow's streets are teeming with people shopping so that looking down Buchanan Street looks like a black carpet, the Christmas thing is not too in my face. The nearest I get to be constantly reminded of it is the instigation of pantomime season by some of my colleagues in the office whereby any conversation can be interrupted with dreadful puns or cries of "oh no you can't", or "it's behind you" etc. That's pretty funny and lightens the mood considerably. Otherwise, I can almost forget Christmas is coming, and just look forward to a Christmas Party at work a week beforehand and then to spending time with my family, and that's something I'm really looking forward to.

Anyone spoiling my illusions in the interim is likely to be persona non grata though!
