A long day in the car from the anonymity of Culcairn to the wonderful scenery and tourist hordes of Katoomba in the Blue Mountains. As Michelle remarked repeatedly, "they really are blue!" The car journey was lightened by the excellence of some of the local radio and ABC programming (maverick farmers, the history of ice cream, haunted houses and chocolate factories) and the jocularity of the cricket commentators. It was also a reminder that in Australia, there really is something to stop and look at in almost every small town you pass through. Stumbling across a vaguely familiar name in Cootamundra - Bradman's birthplace - was just one small example.. Australia is a fantastic place for a relaxed, slow, improvised holiday. Even the 'crowds' in Katoomba were smaller than we see in our local market. For somewhere that is viewed as a major tourist destination, Katoomba, like so many other places we visited is remarkably friendly.

Life in the car is unusual for us in our current lifestyle, and we were going to miss it, even though we were all happy not to have to worry about Michelle getting car sick anymore! Re-integrating with being surrounded by more than 10 or 15 people on a cooling evening in Katoomba seemed a fitting way to bring down the curtain on our driving holiday and prepare ourselves for Sydney.
