After a leisurely 9am rise in our luxury 4 star hotel we ambled up to the roof terrace and stood in the sun on the 6th floor looking over the rooftops of Rome. As the sun was too bright we decided to go and sit inside in the coolness of the restaurant. Breakfast was fantastic a large buffet, typical continental with breads, hams, cheese, cereal and a whole host of other foods.

After a good feast we descended to the street and had a short walk down to the River Tiber that runs through the centre of Rome, and across one of the many bridges. We walked a short way along the far embankment browsing all the paris style pavement stalls that seem to sell everything from old history books, cheap tourist junk to Armani bags (rip off's of course !)

After passing the Castel Sant'Angelo a fortified castle used by the previous dynasties in which was used very similar to the Tower of London and housed "traitors" of which quite a number lost their heads !!!

After crossing back over the river on a very ornate marble bridge covered by "love locks" we proceeded back down the river back to our hotel to be met by our Mercedes minibus that was to take us back to the airport.

The love locks are padlocks that in love couples leave padlocked to the bridge with the names of both parties written on them with a key held by each person. If your partner does not love you anymore you then you remove the padlock to indicate to them that you have fallen out of love !!!

I then bribed our driver (Philip Alfred) to go on a scenic tour of Rome rather than the more direct route back. This was amazing as he then took us into the historic area and passed The Forum and the famous Coliseum. Built between 60ad and 70ad an amazing place and as Maria said "so much larger in real life !"

This building at the time must have been awesome as all the surrounding buildings were either less than one floor high or they were knocked down to make this place stand out.. Impressive place !

Finally after 3/4 hour trip back through the suburbs of Rome we arrived back at the airport and after saying goodbye to the sun and heat wandered inside back to modern life and reality !!!

Two hours to wait so a quick coffee at one of the small cafe's before been chucked out by a rather rude waitress who obviously had orders to empty the tables for more customers and sales even if you had not finished your drinks... We rebelled and stayed until our drinks had been finished.

We are now playing musical chairs with people as the lounge area we are waiting in has twice as many people as seats.... No more British politeness here - just grab a seat !!

A non eventful flight back to the UK, with a typical Sausage and Mash meal with Sticky Toffee Pudding, a bit different from the Italian meal last night and the mystery of my vanishing bottle of water, that I had by my feet before take off. Aparantly it shot down the plane to the rear as we took off and climbed higher !

A slight delay in getting back to Leeds Bradford both in passport control and waiting for Sentinal Car Parks to pick us up, but we all finally arrived back in Harrogate around 5pm....

Tired and weary feet from all the walking, but an enjoyable time......
