Leave the coast bound for Bedugal.
En route we visit the lively Seririt market then spend the rest of the morning soaking in the traditional Banjar holy hot springs.
Soak in the enchanting Banjar Holy Hot Springs, where the warm waters gush from the mouths of stone-carved nagas (dragons) in a beautifully landscaped lush tropical garden.
Continue to the tiny hilltop village of Munduk (approx 1 hr)
Walk through clove and coffee plantations to a hidden waterfall for a refreshing dip. The area offers superb views across the hills of Bali and, on a clear day, the beaches of the northern coast.
Travel on to Bedugal (approx 1 hr)
Cool and misty, the beautiful Bedugal region is a series of volcanic formed lakes and mountain ranges covered in lush vegetation.
Bliss a lie in to 8am !! Despite a restless night due to warm patches of body (sunburn !!)
After a quick breakfast and pack, it's back on the road, but not far it's marching competition day and our best laid plans are halted as we try to drive along a road with at least 114 small signing marching troupes
Next onto the oldest buddest temple in Bali ! A wonderful peaceful place with amazing carvings. With all the family temples the whole island appears to be a film set for Indiana jones !
Next stop was a Market and this was a typical far eastern Market with a full attack on all senses especially as we walked past all the ladies selling fish on not too clean plates and dishes whilst sitting on the floor on what I can only describe as a gutter ! After the life animal section it was a relief to get into the veg section not that we could recognise most things at least they looked semi eatable !!! One different stall was the tobacco store selling tobacco by the kilo !!!
Poor Peter is not too well today and sat out of the Market in the minibus, probably a good move !!!
This is a great place for photo's unlike Thailand who don't like photos this place they all want you to take their photo's !!
Then we headed back into the mountains and after a 500 metre walk down a hill to an amazing 200 foot waterfall which was so refreshing standing near it getting soaking wet !!! Pity we had to then climb the path back up. By the time we got back to the minivan we were drenched again... This time in sweat !
Finally we stopped at an amazing hilltop restaurant with far reaching views back down to the northern Bali coast from where we had just come. Expensive but it had wifi and we had a conversation with Matthew wiggins !!! (Helens boyfriend for those not in the know !)
You know when they say Bali is beautiful - they are not wrong, this whole island is amazing and so off the main tourist route the people are so friendly, no hassling when in shopping areas just fantastic
I must talk about the roads in this mountainous area hardly wider than one minibus with sheer drops down 1000 feet, hairpin bends every 50 feet and gradients you don't think a vehicle can drive up !!! Add to that hundreds of motorbikes over and undertaking you and with every vehicle coming from the other direction wanting to run you off the road it's fun ! (not !)
After a final visit to a huge temple the Ulun Danu Beratan temple which is one of the most holiest places situated on the west side of lake Beratan We had great fun in the grounds as there were statutes of animals all over !
I better report on the fish/chicken story. Both Kim and Nadia are vegetarians and they both ordered a noodle dish at lunch time. Nadia opted for a seafood version and Kim a veg version. When it came Nadia's fish had chicken in !!! When we complained to the waiter finally the owner came up and said it was not chicken but White fish !!! In the end he went away and cooked both chicken and this White fish and we had a taste test on behalf of the girls, most of us agreed that you could not really tell the difference !!!
So we have finally arrived at our hotel for the night, a luxury one called Strawberry Hill !!! Small individual bungalows set in lush landscaped grounds with all mod cons including wifi and a tv !!! James bond was on channel 1 in English with Indonesian subtitles !!! It is however cool as we are 1200 metres above sea level which is quite funny as all the Brits are walking around in shorts and tea shirts and Graham (Australian) and our guide are cold with multiple layers !!! Evening meal was served inside for the first time this week in a swiss style chalet room complete with roaring log fire !!! Our guide robino spent most of the night sat at the fire, and it was a chilly 22 degrees !!! One of the waiters had a proper jacket and wooly hat ! Food is so cheap here, tonight's evening meal of a shared starter, 3 main courses, two puddings, two pints of beer, a hot chocolate and a strawberry shake came to just under £15 !!! Not bad for a posh restaurant, then we blew the budget and had three baileys which cost £16 !!
As the straight baileys was not on the menu ( see problems with orange a few days earlier) they had considerable problem trying to work out how to serve, as the baileys was in their eyes part of a cocktail drink ! Finally after much discussion between all the staff and ourselves questioning why we just wanted baileys on their own, and 20 mins later three baileys appeared complete with ice !!!
After another busy day we are back in bed at just before 10pm !!!
P.s the only place with a hot shower in the room
