Pre Blog

We arrive is Guilin and take a bus transfer to Yangshou (1 1/2 hours). Yangshou has become very popular for the cafe and bar culture, but primerily is the best place in china to witness the local culture and traditions.

After our long travelling over the past 24 hours, today is a rest and relaxation day.

Live blog

We have arrived at yangshuo at 2.30 after travelling since 4pm yesterday- yippee !!!

The trains are interesting - don't use the loo, don't use the wash room, don't use the hot water, don't use the food from the trolleys, don't use the bed !!!

Well we survived the longest train journey yet and the experience of the journey

After the train we took a 2 hour local bus which was a bit rickety !!!

Just to diversify a bit Robert has some great phrases :-

- mentally prepare yourself
- dear friends
- get me
- nooooo problem
- 24 by 7
- WOW !
- Watch your belongings
- Check carefully All corners of your bed
- Prepare your favourite snacks for the whole journey

Our hotel is simple but clean but why do the Chinese insist of having the shower head over the top of the loo !!! - no loo roll, but I suppose it would get wet !!

Yangshuo is amazing, a small town nestled in the middle of high 'avatar' type mountains with sheer vertical sides covered by trees (see pictures)

Don't be put off by the white skies on the pictures - the sky's are clear but with the heat at nearly 40 degrees its hazy.

Robert took us for a tour around the town and soon we were sitting in an upstairs veranda looking over the town (at Lucy's) food has altered and it appears to be more like British Chinese. Helen and me shared lemon chicken and special fried rice, which tasted just like our local at Harrogate

Beer is now Liquan Fresh beer and at 12 rmb (£1.20) for a 600 ml bottle it's going down well

A leisurely 2 hours eating and resting after our mammoth 24 hour journey and then a wander down to the river Li before ambling along west street back to our hotel via a supermarket to pick up a loo roll !!

Early evening we left for a performance. We were beginning to wander if they had any culture at all. We sat in terraced seats and watched a show about old china. Ploughing fields with water buffalo, old customs and girl meets boy. The backdrop was the River Li and the Mountains beyond, so a stage of approximately 3 miles and 2000 m high !! With lights lighting up the mountains in different colours and 630 actors in the foreground all on boats it was amazing. The sounds and singing very Chinese. The director was the person who created the opening ceremony for the Beijing Olympics !!

The scenery along the Li River is spectacular isn't it? Have you seen the cormorants fishing yet?
