Pre Blog

Today we climb the Drum towers. The bell tower is in the centre of the downtown Xi'an where the cities 4 main roads meet, and served as a watchtower, and later cycle the 13.74 km round the city walls which were built in 1378 AD

We also visit Xi'an Huiling (meaning "wise spirit") - a special intrepid supported project for young people with intellectual and learning difficulties, where we enjoy a performance of singing and dancing (don't be surprised if we get asked to join in)

Well last night was fun... The air con was not working so after arguing with reception three times they finally sent up a 'woman' who said 'knackered' - so she said "we have no rooms left.." I said you have and gave her three room numbers. She said 'those are doubles not twins' - that's ok we both said. So at midnight we swapped... Problem with next one - air con blew cold air but did not cool room. Anyway we stayed. Donna on bed nearest side to blower and me sleeping on floor underneath blower !!!

Morning saw us order a private tour for the 7 of us for 265 rmb each (intrepid wanted 485 rmb each). Robin 1 intrepid 0

Terracotta warriors here we come

After a 1 hour transfer we arrived and wow - very impressive - that's two ticks off the 100 things to do before you die list, Great Wall and Terracotta Army.

The guides we had were always trying to sell especially lunch but I insisted and we ran off and ate a snack else where - others ate for 40 rmb a very substandard Chinese meal... But it was ok the guide got her free meal !!

By the way fuel here is 71p litre !!!!

It's still very hot - we constantly walk round dripping - hope our hotel room has been fixed !!

Just got back, picked up first weeks laundry from Local Chinese man and yes - room is cold

Now sitting in hotel bar having a banana split, x'ian special ice cream, cold beer and Donna with her pint of liptons tea !! ( cost 68 rmb - £6.80)

Our evening meal took us to the Muslim old town. We had an incident in the lift. We pressed level 5 but ended down in -1 (the kitchens) the doors opened an in rolled a few watermelons sticking the door. We finally prized open the door, cleared the melons from pressing against the door and continued up. Great sticker on the inside of the door (see picture)

The meal was great but so many chilli's in every dish.

No beer tonight as it was a Muslim restaurant but I am sure we can miss it for one evening (glad I had two this afternoon

Signing off at Friday 23:08 (uk 16:08)

I met the man who discovered the terracotta warriors when I was there.
