Pre Blog

Today the first day with our group, we have an informal chinese language lesson and a walking tour of the hutongs (ancient network of alleyways and lanes) or maybe a trip to the many sights of Beijing.

Live Blog

Fried egg rice for breakfast, dishwater soup or salad and boiled eggs so we opted for the only western looking item sweet toast.

We then set off on foot around the local hutongs (local lanes) before jumping on a local service bus towards the north bell tower. Here we picked up some bikes - no gears !! And then proceeded back into the road system with all 20 million population of Beijing on our street !

It's lethal !!! Helen was comparing her recent theory test in which there was hazard awareness - she said I am glad they did not have a typical Beijing street as part of the test - everything is a hazard and also it approaches from 360 degrees.

After a while we visited the lama buddist temple with a huge 26 metre statue of Budda - a Guinness world record.

We then stopped for a bite to eat in one of the local hutongs and Helen finally tried a locust on a stick ( see picture) - she was braver than me - she ate one, I spat mine out nearly throwing up !!! Helen obviously a good contestant for "I'm a celebrity get me out of here !"

Lunch consisted of the usual mixed assortment of unexplained dishes.

After lunch we continued on our bikes all the way to Tiananmem square, say Chairman Mao picture and eventually after a few more hours baking in the sun returned our bikes

It was not only hot but the humidity was extremely high and we were a "slight damp" if you want to describe the situation

We are now back in the Sanctuary of our air conditioned hotel room.

As usual there are some fantastic signs around china - I shall comment on others later, but how about this one in our hotel shower - 'caution - wet floor !'

After our evening meal (see picture) we went in search of poncho's.... Apparently it might rain whilst we go trekking .... Have you ever tried to describe a poncho with only sign language, especially when it's 40 degrees outside and wall to wall sun. We tried our charades skills in a couple of shops with disasters ending up at the closest a rucksack !!!!

Eventually in the supermarket we purchased an 'umbrella that you wear' and bingo !!!

The next problem was size... Tara tried to take it out of the bag and it was immediately grabbed back... So we paid for one, Donna tried it on in the shop, with odd looks and then after that worked we bought 2 others.
