the cockerel we were told about that would wake us at sunrise did now crow, due to one fact.... The sun did not rise, as the tropical storm was in full force. Within 10 mins out of our 4 hour trek we were soaked to the skin, but as chai our tour leader keeps saying "Sabai Sabai" - whatever, keep smiling and looking ahead !
(to be continued tomorrow once I wake up !)
If we thought yesterday was tough multiply that by 10! 4 1/2 hours of typhoon instead of 3 of drizzle, paths that rose steeply that was thought unwalkable. I think that most people had physcology given up by lunch time and if a helicopter had landed they would have climbed on board ! Then just as dinner was announced came the river crossing- two bamboo poles submerged under water with a further wobbly one to hold Onto ! Going across was lethal and one wrong move you would have been swept downstream but without backpacks and shoes off somehow we all managed it, the guides crossing many times with our luggage ! Super man and super boy ! After a stop for lunch and a further 1 1/2 trek we arrived at our second village ! Conditions here are dire although the locals seem happy, basic existence with rice grown locally, no facilities ! Wow I am impressed with their outlook. Me and Rachel were asked to "cook the children" and we were taken to a small hut with an open fire (open fire in bamboo hut ! Mmmmm !) and we prepared noodles and veg... What a cooking experience ( on and we were give rice beer (actually distilled gin) - rachel admitted dozing off afterwards with the strength ! The small children then came with their bowls like they had never seen food before - apparently noodles Is rare and they survive on rice only ! Really puts it into reality
Everything is now so wet despite pre measures to keep things dry with plastic bags we all went to bed dripping and had a restless night on hard bamboo flooring, everyone groaning in unison when they turned over - we even all started walking around barefoot in the village as our walking boots were just soggy mud masses ! (Sandra must have had insight when she bailed out thenight before !) anyway we are now a close nit family (just as our leader Chai wanted) and we go on smiling....

OMG! Sounds like all of you really had the trek of your life. And yes, I am a pyschic! :) Glad you guys are okay. Yami felt better the next day, we flew into Bangkok and saw a bit more of this amazing city. Good luck on the train! I cringe just thinking about the toilets. :)
