First day on the bikes. Finally got underway shortly after 12. Managed to get about a mile down the road into San Diego before Iain's first bout of pannier trouble - a sign of things to come.
Riding in San Diego can't be representitive of the rest of the US or the entire nation would be on 2 wheels. On a sunny December afternoon there were a load of riders out - though most didn't look that serious.
Took the ferry across the bay and rode around the coastline to the foot of the bay. Managed to navigate our way across to the border without too much difficulty - the only problem being that it was now 5pm, which meant darkness had fallen and we weren't exactly sure how to find highway 1.
Spent a couple of joyous hours riding along the hard shoulder of the main road, interspersed by the occasional wait for Iain to retreive one of his panniers from the middle of the road.
Got to Rosarito about 8, dived into a motel and had tacos for tea.
