Checking in from the Incheon Airport in South Korea. The sun is coming up right now, which is a very lovely thing. Beth and I flew out of Charlotte at 10:30 last night and landed at 4:30 pm Columbia time (6:30 am, local). Because we were flying west--chasing the sun--it was dark the entire trip. It was very disorienting--reminds me of the stories of Alaskans who make tinfoil hats in winter to remind themselves of the sun.

Beyond the darkness and duration, the flight was unremarkable. Both of us are exhausted and a little brain dead. We grabbed some breakfast upon arrival (pictures to follow) and are currently camped out on a row of benches. I foresee naps in the future. We board for Phnom Penh at 6:30 local time, so we may explore the airport a bit further. There are also "transit tours" for folks with long lay-overs; we'll see how we feel about those.

Stray Observations:

*Incheon airport does not sell diet coke or pepsi. Only the real stuff. Clearly, east Asia hates diabetics.

*Many Korean men wear very tight jeans.

*The thermos solution for carrying my insulin is working nicely.

*Although 90% of the passengers on the plane were Asian, we ended next to redneck from Georgia who spent a significant amount of the time bitching about Jimmy Carter, Angkor Wat, and Angelina Jolie.

*Beth says "It doesn't feel like we're in Asia, because everythings still in English" Me: "English is the new lingua franca (WORD PLAY!)"
