Where I stayed
Yesterday we went to the beach in Cahoon Hollow Beach, huge waves and the famous Beachcomber restaurant. We had two huge Grey Seals playing in front of us all the time.
Robert went into the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The time of day was not the best, late afternoon, sun straight into one's face. Did not see a lot of species, but some quite close, Green Heron flying past at ten meters. The tide was coming up and retreating rapidly, there is a boardwalk to the beach, which was submerged over a 50 meter length. About 15 cm deep. Half an hour later it was above the waterlevel again. Common Tern on the beach, some terns with very long tails, but not the wing pattern for Roseate, which is supposed to be offshore anyhow. The number of small songbirds is definitely below our expectation. The type of vegetation would hold more birds in Europe, my usual birding area. It is a good experience however to be birding in a completely different area. The guiding we normally do in Europe (Flevo BirdWatching and Finca Rafiki Birding) must be usefull to foreign birders.
In the evening we checked out Provincetown which is as far as you can go on the Cape. It's a great place with a thriving Gay scene and drag queens all over the place. We had dinner at the Karoo Kafe which is a South African place where they serve ostrich sate, peri peri chicken and Tusker beer so we felt right at home!
