Woke up to the pitter-patter of morning rain. I don't think it let up all night. So instead of getting up at 5:30 I rolled over and slept another hour. Fortunately the rain let up by the time I finally hit
the trail at 8:30.
Course everything is still soaking wet because of the dripping trees and plants. It wouldn't be a day on the trail without that comforting feeling of squishy shoes. Just a short day and easy walking along some nice little ponds. Early lunchtime at West Carry Pond Lean-to and then the walk from there was refreshingly smooth.
There were even some blueberries along the waterfront at East Carry Pond so I made an exeception and slowed down to pick a few
When the sun comes up I hop in for a quick refreshing swim, the water is just cool but not cold. Apparently there were some leeches but I didn't see any :) Dinner is back to the basics with mac and cheese and tuna packet. Tomorrow morning we are going to a sportsmens lodge nearby for a big hearty breakfast. You can imagine the excitement!
Quick rainstorm passed through and you could see it coming from across the pond, enough time for everyone to get their things under the shelter. Boy it rains a lot in Maine. Wouldn't want to live here with the heat, bugs, rain, lightning.
Speaking of bugs I still don't have any bugspray and today the deer flies were insane. They circled my head ALL DAY, and I had to resort to using my bugnet. Even then they continued to buzz around relentlessly. I killed over 10. Beautiful sunset here this evening over the pond and there are a ton of SOBOs here. They even built a fire much to the delight of Nightcrawler and I
Loons are out on the pond calling into the dusk, has to be one of the most calming and peaceful noises ever. For tonight anyway, my hatred of the trail and desire to be finished has been calmed. Even such the countdown is still on!
No reception which I think is going to be a trend here until the end, since this is a somewhat remote area!! I'll try to get you in on the action when I can. Hope that y'all are well. I can't wait to catch up with as many of you as possible and at the least get you some pictures online! (aren't you looking forward to having to go back and relive all these memories with me?)
