Whew, long day today...I'm glad to be sitting in a shelter off my feet and writing this. Should sleep darn well.
Woke up to more rain this morning, typical! Took a long time to get moving so I didn't leave until 7:30. The pea soup meant skipping all the apparently interesting viewpoints. Oh well.
At 10:30 I arrived at Wolfsville RD and being out of food, had to detour 1.8 miles down into Smithsburg, MD and their convenient Dollar General! Stocked up on the necessities, including athletic tape for my feet and ate lunch on the sidewalk in front. Lots of people stopped to ask about my hike on their way in. Nice folks. So my 3.6 mi detour was annoying but successful.
The rest of the days 22mi hike was pretty uneventful. The sun did come out finally, and I took advantage of the "high rock" to enjoy the sweeping views and interesting clouds. (it was also the local make out point... I clearly annoyed a young high school? couple that arrived there. I think my smelly socks being aired out on the rock drove them away.)
After this high point there was a really tough nasty descent on wet slippery rocks and I managed to fall twice. Luckily no damage. Crossed the Mason Dixon line around 5pm. Hooray I'm now in the NORTH!
Of course the scenery and rocks are the same, but every state line is a good milestone. 7 down 7 to go! Maybe this will mean fewer bibles left in the shelters (harder to start fires? Haha jk) and more science books? Who knows... What I don't enjoy is the total lack of trail magic in WV and MD. Maybe PA will be better.
My feet were weird today. I taped up a toe that was rubbing and literally would start to walk and the next toe would start to complain. Eventually I ended up with all my toes of my left foot taped up and my heel. Thank goodness for DGs athletic tape! My feet look like a mummy.
Ok my sleeping bag is calling. Thanks for all the super comments and well wishes! I really appreciate your support and interest. Hopefully I can be interesting enough that you'll keep coming back for more.
G'nite,Donner
