Hey!
So we woke up this morning to rain falling on the shelter roof, but it petered out quickly. I was the first to hike out which was a total first... Felt quite proud of myself. The first few went fast (and cause of the rain not too many spider webs to clear) and then we hit the big climb of the day up to whitetop mtn and the buzzard bluffs.

Before the uphill someone had left a cooler as trail magic, really got excited but when I looked inside it was all gone. What a let down!

The mtn was 2000 ft in 2 miles. Seemed like forever to get up walking through the clouds, startling deer (and getting scared back too) the view at the top was pea soup...it's always sad to climb a big mtn and then get no view.

Lunch is at Thomas Knob shelter up in the Grayson highlands. This is within sight of the highest peak in VA, Mt Rogers. Also up in the highlands they have a bunch of feral ponies that run around and keep the balds bald. Unfortunately this harsh winter killed off a lot of them... So much so that trail maitenance workers had to clear carcasses off the trail.

We saw a couple of ponies at a distance, nothing to get too excited about.  Since it was raining we are a bit cold in the morning but quickly the trail turns difficult. The rest of the day is all walking on rocks... Really hard on the feet ankles and knees. We did 23 mi today so everything really took a pounding. But, today was the longest day yet!! It was also a one percent day, AND we passed the 500 mi mark.So we are just hoping that we dont get nailed by thunderstorms but at least we cleared most of the high stuff, lightning should be less of an issue.

Hope y'all are well. Missing everyone but having fun!
