Hi y'all!
Well it's been a crazy busy day so lace up the boots straps and come along for the recap!  I was first up this morning after a long night of rain. I slept on a bunk with three young girls so you can imagine my surprise when one of them was profusely snoring throughout the night!!!

Luckily the rain cleared at dawn and the skies were blue with just some big interesting clouds all day.  My plans for the day were undecided when I left camp but I had been thinking of going all the way to atkins and staying in town with the "Maine attraction" a group of hikers...

About 2 hrs into my hike I came across Jane and John up on a ridgeline, and they were very friendly, looking for cowgirl. I told them that she was behind me a ways and then we chatted a bit more.  Their daughter did the trail in 06 and they handed me a fresh ripe
banana. (clearly their daughter told them what we need and crave!!) they also offered to drive me into town at the next shelter when they met up with cowgirl.

The 10 mi to lunch were really easy so I was there by 1130. Ate lunch and then Jane and John being the awesome people they are, drove me and this Canadian section hiker down into town.  So I got all resupplied up at Walmart, in Marion, VA though they certainly didn't have everything. (where is Dollar General when you need it?)

Then we walked back to the other side of I-81 and hitched back to the trail. It took about an hour to get a ride prolly bacause we didn't have our packs so it wasn't necessarily clear we were harmless hikers. I need to get a female hiking partner so I can hitch rides easier!!!!

Back at partnership shelter I repack my bag and just hang out with the hikers around there. This shelter is pretty new, has a shower, sink, loft, and is right near the ranger station which has a phone and YOU CAN ORDER PIZZA!!!!!!  Being a starving hiker (i've lost 10 lbs now) I stuck around and ate half a large pizza, then at 6pm saddled up the bag and hit the trail for the last 7 mi of the day. It was a race against the terrain and the sun. But it ended up being pretty cool. Saw my first bear on the trail about 75 yds in front of me. He didn't see me at first so I had time to get my camera out ( the picture didn't really come out though...I'm sure now no one will believe I even saw one!)

Then, since it was getting dark I started hiking towards him and yelling "hey bear, I see you! If you want my food you've picked the wrong hiker!!" etc he turned and ran immediately so no great story about wrestling a bear or anything. Probably good since he was a big bear.

Then at dusk I came to an awesome overlook of the valleys just as the sun was behind the clouds... Absolutely spectacular and I would have loved to linger, but I'm not real confident about night hiking yet. As I turned to start down the trail again I nearly stepped right on a rabbit that had just come out under my feet! So I guess moral of the story is if you want to see wildlife, hike at dusk. ( oh and I didn't even mention the several deer that were hanging out on the trail too.)

So I made it to the shelter as it was becoming totally dark but didn't have to use my headlamp (still don't have Any night hiking experience...) stambler is here and she's real talkative, telling me all kinds of things. She's from nashville, so that's cool.

Today on the trail there was a sandy rocky section that just felt like a trail in Michigan that would open to one of the lakes at any minute. Sometimes I feel odd saying that I'm from there, but I really miss it and I love that state. It will always be home I guess, whether I'm in TN, south America, Europe, or hiking the AT.

Well that was a big nasty entry, you all should be proud though. Today I went in to town, didn't buy any restaurant food, no hotel stay, and the only junk food I got was a box of Oreos and a sprite. Solid effort there... I need to do more of that to stay on a budget. Towns are expensive and now they are everywhere! You can go in nearly everyday!

Hope all is well out there. Thanks for the comments! I'm sure my journal entries are all screwed up since I didn't have service for a long time. I'll try to fix it up next time I get the chance.
Sweet dreams!
