Hello!
Today started early, (staying at the hostel ) one moron that's out here with us started yelling at another hiker and threatening him (at 6am) didn't sleep much after that.

We had the excellent idea yesterday to buy some breakfast. So we toasted up a box of eggos and bacon with syrup. It wasn't quite the Mtn Harbor B&B but it was good fuel to start the day.

The first couple miles were all through this spectacular gorge on the Laurel Fork River. It was all sheer rock walls and cliffs and the trail was really fun ( and mostly level ;) ) at the end of the gorge walk I was treated to this awesome waterfall. Just sat there mesmerized by the white water, morning sunshine, and roaring sound. (after a while my bladder interupted the moment haha)

After the gorge we had a big mtn to tackle. Everyone at the hostel had been bellyaching about this one and "cowgirl" told us that it was really hard and that we should slackpack it in the other direction... Which a lot of people did do.

Anyways I was fully loaded, went up the mtn, shrugged my shoulders, and that was it. No sweat! ( haha ok THAT is a lie!) at the top I checked in with mom and dad on the phone since I finally had some decent service.

After the mtn we hung out at Lake Watauga (a fake lake) which has a little beach area. I waded in but the water was too cold even for hot tired feet.  The second half of the day included crossing the dam and climbing up to the Iron Mtn ridgeline. We are staying at Vandeventer Shelter which has this ridiculous view off a rock cliff down over the mtns we've
climbed and the lake. Well be walking this ridge most of the way to Virginia.

The trek to water was awful (.3 mi one way and about 500 ft downhill) but hikers always find something to complain about right?  Speaking of which, knees are really hurting. I had to switch my knee support to the opposite leg at lunchtime and I think I'll buy another one in town. Blisters are still ok so far. Our hiking buddy Beefstick hasn't been so lucky. He woke up this morning at kincora with an infection so he's zeroing to figure that out. Feet are such an
important issue out here.My stomach has also hurt a bit lately, I think maybe I just need to
eat a little healthier next town. ( I'd tell you what all I ate but my mom might try to come pick me up right now!!)

So that's that, another 18 mi day done. After seeing a ton of people at the hostel it has thinned out again...just nice people I want to be around are here, which is excellent.  Hope you are well. These are probably really boring these days, and I do apologize. I'm no Bill Bryson!

Hi Rob! I have enjoyed your blogs so much! You say you are no Bill Byson--well I just finished his book (again) and I have to say you are just as interesting. Actually more as you are doing the whole trail. It was fun reading your account and then his as the places were the same. Keep healthy and it sounds like you are having the time of your life! Hey Rob - dont know your aunt but guess she´s right about her last thought in her comment. I didn´t like BB´s books - but still read every morning your stories - and not just to improve my English (even I should) ;-)
Weimar is great these days, spring is there, cherry-trees in blossom, open beergardens - time to have an icecream next to Goethe & Schiller :-))

Take car & enjoy
Thomas
