Did you know that the Appalachian trail is a unit of the national park system? It is maintained by volunteers. The amount of work is staggering. After each winter the trail has to be cleared of blowdowns and other debris, and before the bulk of hikers get out ( but after the winter is over) after my hike I plan to get out and do magic but also help by volunteering for trail maintenance.
So today was super easy, but the morning was very cold, around freezing which is just a pain when you are trying to cook breakfast and pack your bag (not to mention squeezing into hard cold boots!!) Once the extremities thawed out after 30 minutes of hiking the morning was quite nice. Couple short climbs and a soft descent down to the road. We are staying at Kincora Hostel run by this awesome guy Bob Peoples
also just a really cool guy and his place is great and cheap.
We've met all the same people that are hiking in our "bubble" and a few from different spots. Have an easy time resupplying in Elizabethton and cook a big spaghetti supper at the hostel for dinner.
Have a few big miles coming up but excited to make more progress. Also I should be eating well. Picked up some vitamins which I really should have already been using, but better late than never. Hopefully I'll get into protein when I find it at a store.
Couldn't find toothpaste (well the small size kind anyway) so I'll be brushing with water, which I've heard is still ok??
Hope all are well. It's weird to be sleeping inside on a beautiful night.
