Hiya!
Hope everyone is doing well, hope you have no bad foot ailments or knee troubles, if you are suffering from these things, I am sorry, and I feel your pain!

So after hanging out in Franklin, spending too much money, etc... We caught the free 8:30 shuttle and about 8 hikers and packs crammed into a conversion van. On the trail by 9 is definitely a good start for us, especially when fueled by a good nights sleep in a BED and pop tarts, oatmeal creme pies, and snickers for breakfast (my mom taught me well!)

I bought new socks in Franklin and found some liners at the hotel so my feet are feeling good at least to start. The weather is pretty yucky which lasts all day. We basically trudge it out most of the time up over Silers Bald and Wayah Bald. The views were like staring at a
big sheet of paper.LAME

At Wayah there was an obervation tower and you are supposed to be
able to see the Smokies (Clingmans Dome is only 26 miles as the crow
flies... So much farther in hiking miles.  Tomorrow we are hoping for another chance to glimpse the route ahead, as there are many rumors about the Smokies this year and how bad they are (snow)

As soon as we got to camp the sun came out ( figures) and I ate a Lipton chicken dinner side with a whole package of peperoni thrown in.  Man if you ever want to eat whatever you want and then lose weight, come hike the AT. It is crazy to shop at the grocery store and compare foods based on eating the most calories possible. I genuinely feel sorry for the overweight shoppers watching us buying snickers bars and other delights.

Today was the longest so far,16 miles! Of course eventually that should seem like a short day, but my feet don't agree yet. I don't even think I'm going to look under the bandaids. My ankles also really hurt now... Probably just getting tendonitis. Going to sleep with them elevated to try to reduce the swelling. Should be down to the Nantahala Outdoor Center tomorrow afternoon.  Might take a zero and go whitewater rafting. I have a week to go like 40 miles ( meeting the parents and cousins Marie and Colin at Fontana dam on thurs) my feet could use some time off.

Man I blabber so much on this thing. It's great that some of you still manage to read along. I'm still hiking with Mitch ( now " roughin it") sherlock, Willard, and today "on the loose" and "akido Jo" joined in for the long march.
16 miles, that's 64 times around a track, oh yeah and don't forget the
40 lb pack. OH and the MOUNTAINS.
Ok need sleep. Goodnight!

Dad on

Hey...I've been off line for the last several days and just got caught with your blogs. Thanks for making them so interesting! Almost feels like I'm with you (except for the blister part). Do you want some different shoes to replace the crocs next week end? Send a list of what you need, since I'll be coming from home. Current plan is for me to pick you up at Fontana late afternoon/early evening.

Hope you get the whitewater trip in...that's always fun and maybe help your feet heal a bit.

Weather is great here today and I will be heading out to the cut the grass in a bit.

Love
Dad.
