The vacation in the keys has ended and this morning we bid goodbye to out fantastic hosts the Mosers and left for Naples, driving through "alligator alley" on the way. Basically there is an alligator every 50-100 ft along the side of the road!! We stop a couple of times to walk on the boardwalks out into the swamp and get closer to the wildlife.
By the time we arrive in Naples, we are tired and a leisurely dinner caps off a nice sunny FL day. Stephen flies out in the morning and we will drive through the night to begin the trail monday morning. I say we because my mom is joining me for the first 4 days which is about 40 miles. I have high expectations for her ability to conquer the first about 1% of the trail with me.
I got my boots today ( they were being resoled in colorado) so everything is in place. I am very nervous, as this is an entirely new adventure for me. I feel about the same as the night before leaving for chile, Germany, college, or high school. I'm excited to meet new people and become comfortable with the woods as my home. It should take me less than 6 months if things go according to plan. Everyone says the hardest obstacles are mental, but I'm just worried about my body failing me.
It will be a struggle and a grand adventure. And please don't compare me to that kid from " into the wild". He was a lot stronger, smarter, and handsomer than me (until I too get a movie star to play me anyways) So the next report will be from the top of Springer mtn.
I'll sign with Rob(ert)(o) until I get a trail nickname
