so first stop pacific and mission beach... both beaches are fronted by houses and apartments and so only accessible from certain footpaths and boardwalks between the buildings.. the beaches together are 3 miles long , sandy , windy and quite empty actually.. .. mission was interesting because as a peninsula we just walked back across Mission Blvd, the only road in and out of the area, which apparently in summer can be so congested that the police close it, to find the calm , warm enclosed bay with yachts and rowing boats ..very different from the beach..
we then headed over the bridge towards Ocean beach on the next peninsula, san diego has three
we drove back to downtown passing beautiful parks and lakes and stopped for a few photos of downtown from this northward angle.. we stopped at the maritime museum, just for photos of planes and helicopters perched on top of a huge aircraft carrier..along with other warships that were docked there..
next we drove over the spectacular 2 mile long Coronado bridge which arches over the bay with super views back to downtown.. once an island coronado is now home to the navel base and many upmarket houses and hotels..we drove into embarcadero marine park for lunch with superb views back to downtown again..
silver strand blvd runs down the 5 mile sand spit only 60ft wide in places, with no parking/stopping allowed, to imperial beach another popular sandy area and back to the southern end of San Diego...
we had enjoyed our stay in san Diego but now we must leave and begin the long and winding..no empty.. road to phoenix..
