In the morning Ian and Jo gave us a case and Ians suit to take to Marks, to save them carrying it round for a week, they are off to San Fran and las Vegas before getting to Marks next week..

We decided enough time spent in traffic meant it was bye bye LA.. so we set off south on the coast road to San Diego..first stop was long beach known for its long stretches of sandy beaches and also has housed the Queen Mary since 1967..we stopped for a few photos but did not want to wait in queues for a look round the ship. It was awesome to get up close with her and her famous three chimneys..

We drove on to downtown long beach. Here in the three blocks surrounding Palm ave the tree lined streets were full of modern looking restaurants and bars, it seemed very vibrant , very clean and spacious after the griminess of LA.. Next was a stop on the beach front... mile long stretches of golden sands with palm trees in the foreground is beautiful however it just went on and on in a  sort of characterless way..so after a few photos we moved on...

This area is known as Orange county and houses the first Disneyland which we resisted visiting..and Nixons birthplace but it was a bit out of our way so we just continued on the coast road...

I found it amazing that the urbanization did not stop , for the whole 100 miles to San Diego.. and along the way really popular sections such as Laguna beach and Salt creek were bustling with people trying to find parking slots.. we found a quiet car park above salt creek and had lunch overlooking cliffs sand and massive expensive cliff top properties with very nice views...

Here we decided to join the freeway for the last 40 miles as time was getting on and our aim was now to get to campsites before dark ... so we can see what the surroundings are like.... no more runways please...!!!..

Coming in from the north one has to climb up to soledad park... i like to give Robin a challenge, so we drove the equivalent of 5 tonne truck up the very steep, winding and narrow 1 in 4 road up to the peak  for amazing views across the city and back up the coast. definitely worth the effort.. then we did the scenic drive round La Jolla , translated as the jewel. the tiny town sits atop cliffs surrounded on three sides by the ocean, the coastline is rugged with caves and coves. a very pretty place.. we chose a nice campsite near by, in the Mission  Bay area and after parking enjoyed a beautiful moonlit walk around the inlet bay.. passing many very "extended" mobile homes... it seems if your home has wheels no planning permission needed but they have extended with wood and in some cases brick to make amazing huge dwellings...

excellent day ...
