after a quick paddle and passing a sign saying 740kms to Cairns, we drove on through bowen a town with some history but little else and then on to ayr.. a bigger town but nothing really to see, no beach, very run down, industrial and no where to park so as it was now getting late we parked by the roadside outside a school...what made that decision interesting was about 11pm, while i was sleeping, robin heard water being sprayed onto the windows..yes the sprinkler system for the school grounds had started up...he said it made it jump at first and went on for about 20 mins.
leaving early next morning we set off for townsville.. this is one of the biggest cities on our trip..so we spent some time looking round and walking the beach front... a beautiful beach with no people on... you cannot swim and it is too hot to sunbathe..very strange to see for us british eh..?? after a nice cool cider on the watersedge we drove on to cardwell our stop for the night...and found a nice beach car park with a bbq that sadly did not work, so van cooking again...!!
the morning was spent looking round the free museum in cardwell..it was very informative about the sea life and plant life in the region..including the dugongs..from the porpoise family..and how mangroves are an essential part of the cycle of life..
