it was a mistake to park here down by the river on the sh1...we did not realise how close we were to the railway line and anyway we had passed many railway tracks running alongside the roads but had only seen 3 trains in the whole 3 months..but last night the cargo trains ran every hour noisily hooting and clonking over the metal river bridge ...we were woken up every time..!!
it is a bank holiday here with most of the shops closing...so an ideal day to drive through the centre of auckland..the sh1 southbound from auckland was almost nose to tail for the whole 70kms, glad we were going north..first time we had seen a traffic jam in new zealand , all getting out of the city for the weekend i guess..
we parked in the very quiet city centre and walked to the sky tower... deciding not to go up we just sat and watched as people jumped off, and paid $250 for the privilege, interesting to see from below and hear the screams ...after a walk round queen street , window shopping only..we found a nice spot in a park near the harbour bridge..where we enjoyed a more peaceful night..
we were up early so we could drive around the city with little traffic...we saw ponsonby street, the nottinghill of auckland and then along quay street to see the harbour..then we headed to otara, a suburb where on saturdays the square turns into a local maori market, with traditional food, clothes and craft work...all very interesting and we were one of only a dozen white faces there..
we then drove on to howick and a complete contrast,a very affluent area with trendy cafes and bars... we wandered round for a while then drove to a top ten campsite passing the very spot at kawaraka bay where we spent our very first night here in nz...87 days ago...
another bank holiday so another drive towards the city...we thought we would go up to the north shore today...first stop over the harbour bridge to devonport , a cute town with a few bars and cafes and a great view back over to the city..then on to the much bigger town of tara...... which is very trendy with loads of cafes and shops and a beautiful well kept seafront..we then drove to henderson and on to a reserve near the falls where we stayed in a car park..
we drove along the bay road to mission bay and st helier which was full of bars, cafes and people, we had a nice lunch and then drove back to henderson to spend the night in a pop in a reserve car park..
our last day..it has been amazing so many things seen and so many new experiences ..including living in an area only slightly bigger than my garden shed for 3 months....!!
we spent the day with marie and fred and would like to thank them again for all their help in making our holiday super.....
we spent the night in a top ten and packed ready for our flight tomorrow..
goodbye new zealand i will miss you ... it was robins dream to come here and he is delighted we did it.. and i am glad we managed to see all of it in 3 months as there was talk robin thought we may need longer...!!!
