wow march already it is going quick... we started today going to puzzling world a complex built by a guy interested in optical illusions puzzles and mazes... 6 rooms with all sorts of wierd stuff ...optical illusions and holograms and rooms on a slope where it has the illusion water is running up hill...all very interesting..then an outdoor maze to crack which we did in just over the average time at 50 mins...
we had lunch overlooking the lake and then headed off along the sh6 towards lake hawea.... what picture postcard views..it was another sunny day reflecting on the beautiful azure blue water with pine trees and snow capped mountains as a back drop...really beautiful...then the road flicked across to the northern shores of lake wanaka for a last look and then weaved its way through the dense rainforests of mount aspiring national park.
we stopped at cameron flats for the night a doc campsite.... for the past few nights robin has been woken by scratching gnawing and rustling...i wear ear plugs so no problem usually but last night there was a really loud gnawing and we were worried morris could gnaw through the electrics.. we had asked several times if morris would please go...our overnight stops have been just right for him to get off and enjoy new surrounds .we had been checking the food cupboard and he had not penetrated it yet.... sadly it seems he did not heed our warning so today we bought a mouse trap...and after putting chocolate in the trap he was caught and the next morning robin placed him under a bush at cameron flat....sad...rest in peace morris...
we continued along the sh6 stopping first at thunder creek falls, a short walk through forest and a great view to 100ft falls cascading over the cliff..next the gates of haast where a suspesion bridge crosses the canyon from one mountain range to another..huge bolders lie along the river bed and huge cliffs engulf you making you feel very small as the water pounds over the rocks..
roaring billy was next, a gain a short walk through forest led to an almost empty river bed and from the other side the echoes of the waterfall roaring like a lion..we walked over the river bed and made a cairn with the flat stones dedicated to morris the mouse...how sad ..
we drove on to Haast visitor centre which had interesting displays showing the history and wildlife..but haast itself was a desserted town with little more than the pub..
we had lunch by the beach... 1st one for days..and then went over the longest single lane bridge in new zealand, over the river haast, and on up to ship creek for a look at the fresh water lake just 200m from the sea behind the sand dunes..we stayed in a doc campsite at paringa lake..
lake paringa is a fresh water lake stocked with salmon and trout and had great views of mountains in the distance..after a short walk we headed on to fox glacier..the town of fox glacier is on the eastern side of mount cook...we had flown from the west side last week to land on the top of fox glacier and now we were at the bottom..a short 60 min walk from a doc carpark led to within 200m of the lower icefall from the glacier..it was all fenced off from there and we wondered if they were being over cautious then we heard this dull cracking sound and watched as rocks and ice fell about 150ft onto the river bed below and it happened a few times echoing into the valley ..facinating but dangerous... we stayed in fox glacier town at top 10 site..
