before leaving christchurch we had a last walk on brighton beach...lol.. windy sandy and huge..
then set off for the long drive to lake Tekapo..290km of not that interesting countryside in damp misty weather..but then an amazing thing happened as we approached Burkes Pass in the two thumb mountain range the weather instantly changed..we could see the sun like a glow over the mountain tops and blue sky looming up before us, it was quite extraordinary .... as we actually went through the pass the line of clouds were left behind sort of trying to come over the mountain but just evaporating ...like dry ice coming out of a bucket ..the clouds just sort of lying on the tops bubbling away to nothing...and bright hot sunshine through the other side of the pass...
so the next part of the journey was much more fun the valley looked more inviting bathed in sunlight and as we began the slow decent towards the lake the sun reflected a beautiful aquamarine of the water, the dark green pine trees on the lake edge perfectly contrasting and the snow covered mountain tops behind....it was so so beautiful..we just stopped and stared...
we found a nice DOC camp site on the lake edge and spent the night ...
