further up the peninsular we went, arriving at Kaiteriteri...an awesome place sands so golden and a super backdrop of hills with very expensive houses on...the estuary flows into the sea here and it makes a super bay for swimmers surfers kayakers and boaters..it was the most crowded we had seen a beach so far.
we had to get up early today as the showers were 4km away...lol.. robin drove me while i was still in bed..cool eh...!! we had brekkie by the lake and then a drive up the mountain road to mount robert to get super views over the lake and surrounding area..the clouds were still covering the peaks though but the lake looked awesome..we watched some walkers do the start of the 5hr summat walk as they got smaller and smaller up the mountain side..
we followed the road to westport next..which winds next to the river buller all the way to the coast..though interesting in places the river was very empty and so not as awesome as in winter ..however in some places the road twists and turns alongside the mountain side and in places just one track road dug out like a shelf into the mountain rocks...very interesting..
today is bank holiday here and just to make us feel at home it was pouring with rain....so shopping again...hoorah..alas town was shut bank holiday monday...lol..oh well ...so headed south on the SH6 to Greymouth and what an awesome road that is...first it was a bit flat but then the road followed the coast line and it was dramatic and rugged and rocky and sandy and steep and mountainous and super...we stopped several times for photos and robin even said the weather...ie misty murky damp...added to the etheral feel of the area....it was amazing..we passed charleston an old gold mining area...and the coal mining town of brighton ..!!..and te miko both had huge populations in the 1850s gold rush..but abonded ghost towns now..
we stopped at Punakaiki where a short walk over the cliffs leads to the pancake rocks and blow holes...tide was out so not awesome as they could have been however the pancake rocks as it sounds are flat pices of rocks 100ft high and apparently baffle scientists who wonder how they got there..we also did trumans walk just a 30 min walk through woodland and then onto a beach below cliffs only accessible from this walkway... cute waterfall there too..we found a nice little car park right by the beach for the night ..interesting day...
