Saturday 21st
sad to leave our beatiful spot we drove into Opononi a really cute village on the edge of the estuary with a sandy bay and view to the sand dunes across the water.in 1955 a dolphin came to live in the estuary and apparnetly became so tame children could ride on his back sadly in 1956 he got caught in the roacks and died soi they have a monument of  him outside the information centre....we walked to a view point over the harbour and watched with interest as the currents flowed into and out of the harbour mouth..

we set off for the 20 km drive through waipoua forest where we stopped to see the 2000yr ols live  kauri tree named Tane Mahuta by the locals because of its spiritual value..i loved being in the presence of such an old tree it felt very powerful...

the drive to matakohe was a little ordinary, flat grass land with grazing cattle we did stop off in Dargaville but it was mostly closed, saturday afternoon....??? ... odd ..  and was a bit remote..we ended up staying the night in the Kauri museum car park at matakohe...

sunday 22nd
we followed the tourist route through Brynderwyn kaiwaka and wellsford nothing very special about this area quite plain really...we eventually stopped at Atuanui scenic reserve for lunch which was by a fast flowiing river where kids were swimming... and walked to see the view over Kaipara harbour...we drove through helensville to stop at Muriwai beach for the night at the camp site... the sand was black but the beach was huge...

monday 23rd
was spent with Marie and Fred again... we had a lovely lunch and dinner with the  family, thanks clive and sue fred and marie for your hospitality...we stayed outside their house for the night...

Tuesday 24th
Marie cooked us brekkie bacon and eggs yummy.. and we had a shower in private...no shower blocks...!! thanks again.. we headed southn on the sh1 past hamilton and cambridge on the main roads with nothing interestingto tell,  stopping for the night in Moana Roa reserve just outside Karapiro...it was right by the river so we spent the evening watrching the water skiiers, rowers and jet skiers playing on the water...very nice spot to stay..
