Following on from our last entry, our first night in Kyoto proved to be one of the best culinary experiences we have had on the trip. We went to Yoshikawa restaurant which only seats about 10 people and you all sit round a counter watching the single chef prepare and cook the best tempura we have eaten. Fascinating as well as delicious - the waitress was in traditional Japanese costume and after the meal we were taken to another room where we had dessert and tea and we were then invited to look at the garden. All quite bizarre but a great experience and the three women who looked after us throughout the evening came out on to the street to bid us farewell as we walked away.
The next day we went for sushi at Ganko Zushi as recommended by Lonely Planet - a good recommendation for a change! We sat at the counter and I ordered 9 pieces of sushi (Chloe bottled it and had tempura and soba noodles although she did try a bit of sushi and shock horror liked it). We then walked to the geisha makeover place and I was told to bugger off for 40 minutes while my wife was dressed and made up. I came back and the transformation was complete! In full white make-up and a kimono, I would love to put pictures up but no USB or SD port at this computer. But we took loads so we will bore you with them on our return. Once back in Western make up and garb, we went back to the hotel for a bit and then had drinks and dinner on a street called Pont-cho which overlooks the river flowing through Kyoto. On our walk back to the hotel, we passed a karaoke bar and decided to give it a go. Got in to our room, drinks delivered and then we were belting out a barrage of Lynch classics - duets, solos and my amazing version of Jay-Z rap in Crazy In Love by Beyonce. Unfortunately this has been recorded on a camera phone by Chloe. What a laugh, I would definitely do that again. Stayed for an hour and then back to hotel about 1am.
On Saturday 21st, we caught the bullet train from Kyoto back to Tokyo and then caught the Narita Express from Tokyo station to the airport - not too much dragging the bags through crowds thank goodness. Check in all fine, no sign of Peter Andre in the departure lounge (he must be avoiding me), and we took off about 6.30pm for Bangkok. Watched Iron Man 2 and touched down in Bangkok at around 10pm. We were staying at the airport hotel so got the shuttle bus there and crashed out.
On Sunday, we were flying to Koh Samui, an hour flight from Bangkok. Our bags were a bit heavy so had to pay a bit of excess baggage but only about 12 quid or so. Got to Samui about 1.30pm and were picked up at airport and taken to our villa called Bacaya in Bo Phut. We walked through the door and were greeted by our maid Jit (who told us she would be there every day from 8am-5pm and make breakfast, jackpot!). Its a lovely place with an infinity pool overlooking our private beach and the calm turquoise sea. Heaven and just what we needed after two months plus hammering it round the world. They had also provided us with a bottle of Viognier in our room as it was our honeymoon, spooky as the same grape as our wedding wine. Obviously tucked in to that pretty much straight away.
I am now writing this blog entry (probably the last one) from Samui airport as we are waiting for our flight to Bangkok where we spend 2 days before flying home. We have had a very relaxing time in Samui, beautiful people and weather, we had a two and a half hour massage at a spa in the rainforest (I fell asleep and woke myself up by snoring), did a Thai cooking course and ate what we produced (my one tasted surprisingly good) and visited some great restaurants and bars (Zazen near Fishermans Village being a particular highlight). And we were looked after so well by Jit - she made breakfast every morning for us, cleaned our room and the villa and our clothes and was generally brilliant. For the majority of our time on the island, we spent it by and in the pool as it was a great place to relax.
Now on the final few days of the trip of a lifetime. Hope you have enjoyed reading the blog and it hasn't made you hate us for banging on about what a great time we are having but it really has been a total blast. See you soon so you can see some photos etc.
Landing in Blighty at 6.20am on Wednesday 1st September!
