We flew out from Melbourne on the 6th October
just after midnight on Malayasian Airlines, quick stop in KL & then onto
Phuket. We found Malayasian Airlines fine, except for the horrible food. All
flights left on time & the service was fine.

Exitted the airport at Phuket & our driver from Cheaper_khaolak
was there waiting, it was very fast & wet drive to Khao Lak & we
arrived in Khao Lak around midday. Our room wasn't quite ready so we had some lunch at the restaurant  & about an hour later it was ready. This was our first trip to Khao Lak & it will not be our last.

There was also a few friends from Trip advisor & FB group also staying here.

After doing some research we decided on the Nang Thong Bay Resort 1 for our stay & so glad we did. We stayed in a beachfront  bungalow & absolutely loved it, the
bungalows were a good size, comfortable beds & pillows, outdoor shower
& loved the verandah out the front. We loved listening to the waves
crashing in at night, sometimes really crashing because the weather wasn’t the
best but we loved it. And the beautiful sunsets in the afternoon were great as
well.

We ate at the NTBR 1 restaurant a few times & all the
meals were great, breakfast was also good & big enough to share. The
location was fine for us, its about a 5- 10 minute walk to the Highway or the
staff will drive you up on the golf buggies & they will wait & drive
you back if it’s a quick trip to the ATM or supermarket. There are a few bars,
restaraunts & massage places on the walk up but we didn’t try any of these.

When you exit the resort & turn right there is a little cluster of shops just up the right, including a massage place, Italian restaurant & a minimart so no need to go all the way to the highway for basic items like drinks or snacks. There is also a cafe called’ Çafe O’ which
we liked it is run by a lovely Thai lady & her swiss husband, she made a
decent Latte & Capuccino, we had a coffee there every day of our stay &
became good friends. We also had lunch there one day just a club sandwich and
that was good as well.

Up on the highway there is plenty of restaraunts, bars, shopping etc etc, the Nang Thong Supermarket at end of Nang Thong Rd has everything you need. One of the things we loved about Khao Lak is that you don’t get harassed like you do in Phuket & you virtually have to walk into a shop to buy something. (Except for the odd tailor or 2of course) The prices
are around the same but then again we are not big or good shoppers so we
probably paid more than we should have for the few tshirts & singlets we
purchased.

Dining:

We tried 'Red Chilli’restaurant one night which is located on the East side of the highway Nth of Nang Thong Rd, not sure why we tried it, maybe I thought the name rang a bell but anyway the food was terrible. Chicken satays that were nearly inedible, a Red Curry that was
tasteless (Very spicy though which was good) & my wifes fish was also horrible.

Went to the ‘Discovery Café’one night which is a nice restaurant just Nth of the Nang Thong Supermarket, staff were great, place was nice but again the food wasn’t great. Green curry this time which was watery & no spice, my wifes steak was tough as old boots but we enjoyed the banana split & would return for that.

No 9 on the Highway was our favourite restaurant that we dined in during our stay, lovely & clean, nice gardens out the back, clean toilets & the food was fantastic. We visited No 9 with another couple & were greeted by the owner who took our order & had them memorised. The
meals were very nice as was the company & staff. Definitely will return
here.

We also had a big couple of nights at the Sakai bar with our TA friends, they don’t actually have food there but the staff just went & got some menus from nearby restaraunts & we ordered food & the staff then collected money & served our food. I have no idea what restaurant they went too but the food we had was great. The Sakai bar played good music, nice comfortable chairs & a pool table out the back. We really enjoyed the
couple of nights out we had here (Maybe one night I over enjoyed) I’m sure the
owners & staff enjoyed our patronage as well. The sakai bar is located on
East side of Highway, South of Nang Thong Supermarket, there is also a cluster
of other bars down a small Soi that have some entertainment.

Exploring
We caught a taxi to Bang Niang Market on a Monday, it was pretty quiet but the market has all the usuall stuff you’d find at any other Thai market. I bought a set portable speakers that I was happy with, the price was ok. Love the street food, We enjoyed a late lunch of Fried chicken, a stick of chicken bums, spring rolls, banana & chocolate pancake & some fruit
shakes.

One of our friends organised a day trip with Boss from cheaper than hotel. 8 of of us went on the trip, We travelled to the Turtle Conservation centre & Naval Tsunami memorial first, then we drove to the Baan Nem Kem Tsunami Memorial Park and had a look around, very interesting & moving place. Next was onto a waterfall, I’m not certain of the name but I
think it was Pakeep Waterfall?, any way we’d had a fair bit of rain the day
before so the waterfall was awesome & cool. Next was onto White Sand Beach
for lunch & undoubtably our highlight of our stay in Khao lak, beautiful beach
& warm water. Not sure of the name of the restaurant but it’s the one
straight ahead when you get to White sand beach, the 8 of us enjoyed an entrée &
main each, the food was delicious & the best we had in Khao Lak. Beer,
cocktails & a bottle of Hong Thong Thai whisky for about 3 hours & the
bill came to 4300Thb, approx. $15 each, ridiculous, considering we/I drank
heaps of tigers. One of our friends has a Thai Fiance, so we got local price.
Anyway was a fantastic lunch with great company. We then drove to Bang Niang
market so the girls could do a bit of shopping & us men could continue reacquainting
ourselves with the Tigers. The girls shopped while us men found a nice little
bar with some live music & enjoyed a good hour of a Thai entertainer strumming
his guitar & singing John Lennon songs. A fantastic end to a wonderful day
trip. We then kicked on at the Sakai bar as I previously mentioned.

We visited White sand beach again with some mates of mine who had been partying pretty hard in Bangkok-Pattaya-& Phuket & came up to Khao Lak for a night for a break, went to the same restaurant & again enjoyed another cheap & great lunch.

We & 2 of our TA friends went to Bang Niang for lunch one day & dined at Nong Prew restaurant & bar on Bang Niang Beach, it was ok, the food wasn’t great but I gather the ATV park that’s there now spoils the ambience a bit.

Nang Thong beach is not a great beach but its still ok , we enjoyed a few morning walks & when the weather was fine it really did have some gorgeous sunsets.

We travelled between 6/10/13-14/10/13, probably had 2 real wet days, 2 not as wet & 4 nice days, didn’t stop us doing anything though as all we wanted to do was relax.

We said a sad farewell to the staff at NTBR 1, I can’t speak highly enough of this resort & it was onto Phuket for the next part of our trip

Well that was our 8 nights in Khao Lak, really glad we went there & we cannot wait until we return.
