Day 355
Saturday 5th November 2011
Las Vegas, Nevada, United States of America (By Danielle)

Viva Las Vegas…..

Diana flew to Vegas in the morning, off to see her friend Kate. In the meantime before our flight to Vegas we took our last walk around San Francisco. We went through the Presidio Park to view the Golden Gate Bridge. It was really cool to see it that close, such an iconic landmark.

We walked back just missing the rain – all this walking in San Francisco is setting us up for our 5 day bender in Las Vegas! So off to the airport we go, getting so excited about getting to Sin City! We were so fascinated by the lights flying in; we could see the whole strip lit up! This was gonna be a fun experience!

Making our way to the Hard Rock Hotel we met the lads- Brook and Browner (guys from Rob's school year). Dropping off our bags we headed off to meet up with Diana and her friends. We walked through the Bellagio in awe at its incredibleness….  That was a great way to kick off our casino tour! The best of the best!

We walked through Caesars Palace getting a weird tall beaker of slushy alco-pop stuff then went to the Cosmopolitan, and met the girls at the Chandelier bar.

Everyone was in great form, really excited about the final tale tomorrow. We went to get into another club, but the price was just not in our budget…. $50 for the guys only $20 for girls… so to be fair, we let Diana and her friends go ahead while I headed back with the lads to the HardRock for some breakfast… time flies here in Vegas!

The World Series of Poker!!

What the hell is this place? Vegas…………….it’s like a Disneyland for adults, you have to see it to believe it. The place it made for over excited horny adults that love to gamble and maybe go to a show! Sounds like heaven for some people!! I kinda love this place but couldn’t live here if that makes sense; if you love people watching you will absolutely love this place. The people you see here are out of this world. But the atmosphere when going out at night is amazing, you will get I nowhere else in the world, so much is going on around you.

Today was a big day for Eoghan O’ Dea who was playing in the last 9 on the World Series of Poker table, he was in with a chance of winning a whopping $8.7 million if he came 1st, but he is still guaranteed 700 thousand if he finishes 9th, but he is 2nd in chip count so hopefully he can go all the way. We know Eoghan through our friend Chubb who is in Vegas with another load of lads we know, there is about 40 of us all together and there is going to be guaranteed chaos if Eoghan comes 1st or last!!

When we arrived at the Rio Casino, where the WSOP was being held we were all given t shirts by the Don (Eoghan’s dad) with O N O D written on them proudly sponsored by paddy power! There was a big turnout for all 9 players from all around the world but hopefully the Irish will be the loudest on the night.

We got our seats and got comfortable; it was kinda surreal being here seeing it live because I usually watch it at home streamed through the internet 15mins behind live time so you can see the players cards, but when you are in the crowd obviously you can’t see the cards so it is so different.

Eoghan lost a big hand which cost him a lot of his chips and was now moved down to 6th from 2nd, our crowd stood really silent as the Germans across the way erupted into cheers when O’Dea folded his bluff to Heinz. The cards went back and forth all day, to make it more enjoyable we decided to get on it with some beers. At the start of the tourney the Irish were pretty quiet but after a few beers you couldn’t keep us quiet, singing all the usual Irish songs!

It came down to a big call by O’Dea, calling J 6 with his A 9, so he was miles ahead and was going to double up until the last card on the table, the river……. …it was a 6………….again everyone stood there completely shocked into what had just happened, O’Dea was robbed literally. Ross Johnson couldn’t control himself shouting down to the other player "You fat coward, you fat coward!!!!" but anyway that’s poker and O’Dea did manage to walk away with $1.7m so not too shabby!!!

The night in Rio Casino was absolutely insane with the top pent house club “Voodoo” being booked by O’Dea. Out on the balcony, 82 floors high overlooking Las Vegas with the tunes blasting!!! This was going to be a night to remember!! 10 bottles of vodka ordered for the table, sexy girls with almost nothing on serving, it is going to be a loose night. It was incredible and let’s just say John O Shea really did go all out, we all thought he was a puff!! Well done to Eoghan O’ Dea for making the last table, massive effort

Down in the Dumps!

Today I had the blues… we had an amazing night, I mean just so awesome but when I got home I realized I had no phone or wallet! Bummer! This put me in a bad place, as it was Andy’s phone (Rob’s Bro) so I felt so bad! Luckily no cards were in the wallet only cash. Rob and I got up at 9am – after only 3 hrs sleep and went back to the Rio to see if it had been handed in… but no luck! We chilled out for the day and ate crappy food, but eventually after a day in bed we got up and walked to the strip with Brook. Las Vegas is all about night time, that’s when it sparkles and shines!

We walked through the MGM Grand; unfortunately no tigers were there but still a really impressive Casino and Hotel. After some more shitty food and a bag of Doritos we hit the hey, ready for our road trip to the Grand Canyon tomorrow.

Day 358

Las Vegas, Nevada, United States of America (By Rob)

Strip Club at 9am anyone?

We decided to be tourists for today and travel to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Browner, Danielle, Me and the worst tourist of all……Plank!! Danielle organized it but when getting to the Rent a car place she accidently booked it for tomorrow instead of today!! But we managed to re-book it there and then.

It was nice to get out of Vegas for the day passing through 3 states, Nevada, Arizona and Utah, pretty cool me thinks!! We got a pretty nice day for a road trip. The worst tourist was asleep missing all the great views while us other 3 got to see the real Nevada!! We finally got to Zion National Park, the North Rim of the Canyon, Utah, Paying $25 in for the day. It had the same rocky look to the Grand Canyon but you didn’t look down into it, seeing miles into the distance. The reason we didn’t go to the main Grand Canyon was that it was another 2 hours drive and that would have been 10 hours in the car, no thanks.

We took a few treks which included the Emerald pools trek, walking along the rocky view. Everyone passing by were kitted out in the best hiking gear and boots, while the 3 of us had shorts on with flip flops, we got some funny looks!! We also took the Weeping Rock trek which brought us to a pretty cool lookout point, Browner was fascinated about seeing a snake, so he was asking every passerby “ is there snakes around here?” haha we saw nothing!

Browner decided to drive home to give me a break. The sun was going down and the scenery was incredible, the sky was a deep orange and a perfect outline of the Canyon in the background.

The greatest moment of the trip was just about to come up, road tripping in the dessert with not a street light in sight, inclining for a few km, just as the road flattens out the best of the day is starring right at us……..Vegas at night from a distance, it was insane, nothing else near, it really is in the middle of nowhere. The flashing light’s of the strip is easily noticed from 10km away. We were all getting excited because it was 6pm and it was our last night in Vegas, so we were to expect nothing else but a big one!

We met up with everyone at Caesars Casino for a drink, hard to believe people are still standing at this stage! The oxygen pumped into the a.c must be doing the job!! Again O’Dea the gentleman that he is organized a night in “Pure Club” in Caesars. Again O’Dea sorted the V.I.P lounge with bottles of vodka!! The night kicked off again, with everyone getting involved for the last night. After Pure some of us went to O’Shea’s Casino to play beer Pong, which is the greatest drinking game ever!! 2 teams of 2 have 10 cups on either side of the table, full of beer; you have a pink pong ball which you have to aim to get inside one of the beer cup, if you do so your opponent has to down it!! We didn’t get off to the best of starts, being new to the game might have had something to do with it! It was a 1 on 1 beer cup to finish, they had the next throw and finished us off, we also had to hand over the money!!

It was 6am and the night wasn’t finished yet, we decided to go to “Spearmint Rhino” to meet the rest of the group there. Spearmint Rhino is a well-known strip club for mainly male visits, but Danielle was intrigued and has never been to one so decided to come along for the visit! She even had to pay in, hahah which I found pretty funny, as if she wants to see naked women dancing around a pole!! Or maybe she does!! Danielle was amazed in what was going on but more so with the show’s that went on, on stage. It was an experience for her to remember, not all girls can say they went to a strip club in Las Vegas!!!!

We ended up getting home at 9am, walking through the Hard Rock floor with the sound of slot machines, poker chips being dealt and even some cheering going on with people winning at Roulette…..at 9am!! That’s Vegas!!!

The Best Shows in Vegas!!

Another day of sleep – it’s so much easier to sleep all day and then get up when the bright sparkly lights of Vegas are calling you!

We walked the strip, taking it all in with fresh eyes – well sort of! We started our evening with a scrumptious dinner from The Cheese Cake Factory. We needed boxes to take home our left overs… the portions here are bloody massive!

First up on the strip was the Mirage Volcano Show, we waited in the crowd and then BOOM! Fire, smoke, lights, music! Oh yes all the American glitz and glam on this one! It was so cool, not really a volcano… but a fire and lights show! This cute kidsitting up on his dad’s shoulders beside me was squirming to get down while the dad was filming and telling him to stay put… “but I am scared it will get me!!” Aww!

We went to Bill’s Hotel and Casino to book tickets for Mystere Cirque du Soleil. Unfortunately we had to then go to the box office in Treasure Island hotel to actually reserve seats! Which meant we had to put off the Belagio fountain show… poo – fingers crossed we get to see it after.

Once the seats were confirmed we had a bit of time to kill but we were too far from the rest of the strip to head back so what better to do in a Casino other than bet! Brook and Browner got to work on the Roulette and Black Jack table. Wohoo to Browner… winning $450… I think he broke even but it’s always fun to end with a win!

The Mystere  Cirque du Soleil show was amazing! Incredible acrobats and performers, and an odd adult Baby! Ha ha! Part of a funny skit interacting with the crowd! The most impressive were the two guys in white lycra ... A little bit erotic- two strong half naked men moving in and around and balancing on each other! The best was when one guy was balancing on the others ankles –the guy lying face down lifted him up and down, this puts serious strain on his hamstring and knees! The other good acts were the Asian acrobats jumping form poles… I do not get how they don’t slip off straight away and how they don’t have more groin injuries!!

We raced out of the show and down the strip in order to catch the last few Bellagio fountain shows. We got there just as one finished but waited for the next in prime location! It was so powerful… the force of the water being shot up was awesome! The first show was played to Italian opera music – very Oceans Eleven, the second show (we stayed for another – they are on every 20 mins) was the American national anthem… a great way to bring a close to our Vegas trip!
