Trip End
Nov 20, 2009
Well, after two years away, the trip finally came to an end. We'd planned it so that the day after we arrived, we were at our friends Vic & Kane's wedding, whom we'd caught up with when we were in Prague. Had a great day (and very boozy night), and was so glad we were able to go (though seemed a bit weird for Brad to wear a suit and Karen to donagain after all this time!). We spent the next 2 weeks or so catching up with family and friends, dropping into our old work, and planning our big move to live in Melbourne.
It seemed strange that the last journey from Perth to Melbourne was going to be our last for a long while, but in true Brad and Karen style we wanted to prolong it as much as possible. After to-ing and fro-ing about whether to fly or drive the 4000km across, we decided to buy a car in Perth and spend a week or so and drive it, packing the car with our packs, doona and pillows and sleeping in it on our way through - the backpacking thinking certainly doesn't stop when you get back to your own country! A great trip and one we'd do again - just kms of open road, cool tunes, great viewpoints across the Great Australian Bight, and stopping on the way in Wallaroo to visit Karen's grandma and in Adelaide for two days to catch up with friends, and then via the Great Ocean Road to our new home, Melbourne.
Our feeling driving in on the freeway and seeing the city of Melbourne in front of us was weird to say the least. No more packing up the packs, but we'd be in a new city with new places to explore, make new friends and (hopefully) secure some jobs. The tenants had moved out of our investment property (our only house now we'd sold our place in Perth) so we were ready to move in 3 days before Christmas.
Within an hour of arriving (we stayed the first two nights with our friend Annette) we were off to a party, and a champagne welcome to the next chapter in our life. What a great night, and great introduction to the funky, happening place that is Melbourne.
