(Note : All entries from now until Perth in November are way
shorter than they should be, as all out text got stolen, together with
our laptop, all our valuables, and almost our whole campervan, when it
was broken into and trashed in Rome at the end of October. Have a look
at that entry if you want to have a look at the damage the bastards
did. The next month or so´s text is written 6 months later, so we may
have forgotten some bits!)
We travelled further south to the lovely coastal towns of Siracusa and Notte (beautiful at night) before double backing and going inland to an amazing Roman ruin near Piazza Armerina. It was the hunting lodge of one of Caesar´s top generals, and was covered in volcanic debris for hundreds of years, which perfectly preserved the mosiacs, and is one, if not the, best preserved examples of Roman mosaics in the world. The opulence and scale of them throughout this huge lodge is just spectacular, from complete recreations of chariot races in the dining room , to gladiator battles with lions, and very sporty looking nymphs (in bikinis no less!!) in what was reputed to be the ´play´ (read 'orgy') room. Something every house should have????
