Saaremaa really is 'old Estonia'.  A sizeable island off the north west coast, just south of Finland, during Russian occupation the island was 'off limits' and as a result the island has changed little for decades.  It really does have the beautiful deserted beaches and the roads through forests where you can drive for an hour or two and not see a soul.  And very good mud so we found out.

We booked into what looked like a surgical day centre for a mud bath the next day, and they said "we will see you here at 12.00 tomorrow for your procedure"!!!!  What do they do with this mud - was this some kind of weird reverse colonic irrigation???  We spent the day in the main town, walking around a completely intact 14th century round turreted castle and faithfully recreating what they would have done in the 14th century - having a cuppa and a slice of cake while checking wi-fi signal in the cafe on the turret roof!  So the castle may have been slightly modified for today's crusaders!

Anyway, back to the mud.  We were led to this white tiled room by a nurse in white, asked to strip and two large baths of warm, slightly sulphurous smelling mud lay before us.  It was actually.......really relaxing.  We would have opted for some naked blondes from Riga to have accompanied it if that were offered......but it was fun, and we did feel great afterwards.  We spent the next couple of days exploring the countryside, old windmills, meteor craters, leaning lighthouses, and protected forests.  Just magical.
