This has been an interesting and busy week here in Oaxaca. With many Catholics living in and around the city, the Easter holiday is a grand one. Everything pretty much shuts down on Good Friday and again on Easter Sunday. There are parades, music, and events all over the city. Palm Sunday was a new and unique experience for me. Here they don`t just hand out regular old palms, they weave them into amazing creations and sell them outside churches all over the city. Itīs quite spectacular and amazing to see how creative these folks are with a simple palm frond.
There are many musical events all week long and on Tuesday I went to the Symphony in the Macedonia Alcala Teatro and enjoyed that tremendously. There was a soloist for the second part of the concert that played classical trumpet and it was really quite spectacular
Paula and I strolled out on Wednesday night for a chololate caliente (hot chocolate), which is one of our favorite things to do. These are truly amazing drinks--liquid gold. We passed a gentleman with a huge telescope in front of the Santo Domingo church and stopped to talk with him. He told us he had the planet Saturn for us to view through the lense. It blew my mind. Never in my life have I seen with my own eyes the planet AND the rings around it. It was a like a National Geographic photo. Totally cool.
Paula has been staying with me in my new apartment for the last week while we have been working together on her art installation. It has been a really enjoyable time for me. I have attached some photos of the construction process, but IĻll be damned if I have a finished photo of everything. Pretty close though. She sketched out her idea and then we spent time roaming around the city trying to figure out the best and cheapest way to construct the project with the limited tools we had. It all worked out really well and I enjoyed the process tremendously. Gustavo (the gallery owner) is downloading images of the finished product to YouTube and when that is complete I will post the information here.
I have also attached a great photo (well, itīs a good one for me) of a gentleman I met on the street two weeks ago
School began again this week and I am off and running again. I resume on Monday and keep my fingers crossed that I will continue to have success with it. Five more weeks of intense study before I go and I need to maximize my time.
Paula returns to Argentina on Monday so we plan on keeping ourselves busy the next few days around the city getting in all the things we have yet to see. Tomorrow is a bit outing to the cemetary which we are both looking forward to. The traditions surround death, especially in this city, are quite interesting and I look foward to our day roaming around tomorow.
Will post again soon. Hope you are all well. Has spring "sprung" where you are yet?
