A novel arrival at the 'Chip'

From Cliff

Well after leaving the air conditioned comfort of the Tapas Bar we jumped onto the bikes for the short ride to our camp ground at Sturgis feeling great.

Now Glen has done an awesome job planning our routes on this trip allowing us to see some fantastic areas and not just travel the boring old Interstates.

However, nobodys perfect right?? His decision not to go the same route as everybody else saw us turn off the nice smooth highway and 100 metres later encounter our first dirt road. "It's only 4 miles Cliffy, want to do it?" came Glens voice over the intercom. "Lets do it" I said as we could then tick that box for the trip and off we went.

After cresting a hill and seeing this road continue for as far as the eye could see I questioned Glen on maybe turning around but he would not hear of it and said we turned left soon. Sure enough a few miles ahead the road turned left for what he said was the last 2 miles of dirt just as he said it would. Feeling a bit soft for suggesting that we turn back I sort of nodded my head and thought to myself that Glen really knows his stuff, it was at this point the track stopped and we were in the front yard of an old farm house.................................................

Consulting his maps Glen said we turned one street too early and we had to take the next left which ended up being about another 10 miles up the track. We had been passed and showered with dust and rocks by about 10 cars at this point and our spirits were starting to wane, I was starting to have many thoughts about this road in my head and there was a lot of swearing going on. It was at this point Glen asked me, "hey Cliffy is that a semi coming up fast behind us??"

And that it was, as we quickly turned off the road into the soft gravel he flew past killing our last bit of hope!!!

We saw the road turn left at the top of the hill onto what we thought was a sealed road and let out a few yells of delight and happer banter over the intercoms. We then turned left onto the worst 5 miles of dirt road that I have ever ridden looking directly into the fast setting sun. The intercoms exploded into much swearing and cursing of this road and we both came very close to falling off on mutiple occasions.

Then, it was over and we were back on a sealed road and what an hour it had been. Neither of us said anything for a couple of minutes in case this was the road just teasing us and it would return to gravel around the next corner which I am sure would have broken the both of us.

Thankfully around the next corner it was the Buffalo Chip campground that greeted us and we were elated.

Got the tent up fairly quickly and headed off to the showgrounds for some beer, food and music.
