Where I stayed
We had no problem getting ferry reservations the same day and even a stateroom – a must for this 12 (read: 13 ˝) hour crossing.
I promised Adam not to go into too much detail so I’ll summarize by saying that following Adam’s mother-of-all-tantrums (the first half of which I was thankfully not party since the driver stays with the vehicle during boarding) we had a quiet passage which marked another milestone on the trip as we left the mainland.
The disembarkation process was, unlike in Topolobampo, much more straight forward. That is to say that I got to drive straight off the ship, then wait, and wait, and wait to clear inspection. It was 9am before we were on the road again (16 hours after the scheduled sailing time). Our destination was Cabo San Lucas to take Keara and Nicky to Senor Sweets for yummy wings. About halfway there, Jeff realized that he left his pack back at the ferry terminal in La Paz – the pack which contained, among other things, the camera and the passports. So we turned around, drove back into the military compound that is the ferry terminal and had to talk our way past the checkpoint (and frankly I have not picked up near as much Spanish as I was hoping to so this was no mean feat) and retrieved the pack which was exactly where he had left it.
Since we were not on any schedule and we’d already driven past this place twice, we decided to take advantage of the ‘Go Clean’ car wash. For the equivalent of less than $10 the van was washed and then hand detailed and vacuumed. This was the first time any real effort had been made on the van’s interior since it we left so boy oh boy was it noticeable. I think we’ll be getting better gas mileage now that the beach has been vacuumed out of the van.
Despite the still-posted banners about the fabulous wings and beer special, Senor Sweets was no longer offering that special (?!). But the wings were still on the menu so we ordered them anyway.
After checking into our resort, we did some grocery shopping of all our favourites, then proceeded to do not much other than hang out at the pool for 3˝ days. Would you believe that three of us even got sunburns! It sort of reminded me of summers when I was a kid the way the kids would go out to play and I wasn’t even really sure where they were. I knew they’d come back when they got hungry. We played pool volleyball, shuffleboard, tennis, and Bingo - Nicky won $1,000,000(not legal tender) and I won a free drink. But all too soon, our relax time was done. I had gotten so lazy and so blasé about the whole packing up and checking out that I even forgot to settle our bill. Fortunately, we hadn’t gotten far though.
