The program started on a Monday afternoon, so my mother and I leisurely took a taxi to the Land of Medicine Buddha after spending a quality afternoon laying on the beach in Santa Cruz. The road was windy and rather narrow, steeply going uphill to LMB property.

We arrived about 4:45pm and were warmly greeted by Ingrid. She gave us our room keys, name tags, welcome folder with our schedule and directed us toward our room. We got very lucky and our room was located on the corner of the building, so it had an additional window. There are two houses that each have approximately 10 guest rooms each. We settled in the Glenhaven guest house. The room was very simply furnished, no excess: two beds, small desk with a chair, nightstand, bathroom and a closet. It was clean and spacious enough for two people.

After settling in our room, we went down a paved path to the dining room hall. A buffet style meal awaited: roasted butternut squash, salad, and the best carrot cake in the world. After enjoying our vegetarian meal we noticed a small library right off the dining room. A collection of books, primarily on topics of meditation and Buddhism was available to check out during one’s stay at LMB.

After dinner we walked next door to a place called Pine Room. Breige Walbridge, our group leader and instructor, welcomed everyone to the program. She thoroughly covered emergency procedures, dangerous plants (poison oak) and animals (mountain lions). While the mountain lions have not been seen on property or near the property, they do live in the Redwoods. Breige covered the LMB’s efforts to recycle and conserve and asked that everyone does the same.

Our group was small and had only 23 participants, which was the perfect size for our location and activities. After brief introductions, Briege had given us a brief introduction of 10 minutes into Qigong (pronounced Chee gong), and 10 minutes of meditation. Perfect way to end the day.

We got back to the room, opened one of the windows and fell right asleep comforted by the oxygen rich fresh air and peaceful sound of redwoods in the wind.
