The day started off great, thunderstorms had rolled in and kept us company til 6ish.
The couple that camped left at 8am. The rest of the hikers left at 9am.
I stayed til 10:30am, killed some time by cleaning out, and rebuilding the fire ring.
At 10:30 I left. Boomerang stayed to zero at the shelter.
I arrived at Iron Mountain Shelter, right after a short drizzle caught me - at least the clouds did not dump down their full potential on me! I was dry and happy.

A few of the guys that stayed at this shelter today, had decided to make the 26 mile hike into Damascus, stating at 5pm. I decided to join them, making my day a 32 miler!
Before we left, Boomerang showed up, she got tired of sitting around at the last shelter. She also decided to sit this 26 mile night hike out.
The first 7.6 miles went fast, we arrived at over 3mph pace to Double Spring Shelter. After some small talk with the couple there, we said goodbye, 18.7 miles to go. As we left.....I went the wrong way,..... started to head down the blue blaze,....I was quickly showed the errors of my way - and then laughed at...... it is my name after all :-)

As dark approached, we got out our headlamps on and had an awesome night hike. There was a small mouse filled emergency shelter on the way to Abingdon Gap Shelter. It smelled horrible, like mice piss and crap - no way would anyone (not even a hiker!) stay there!
Then, as we made our way over a old dirt road...around 12:30am now....there was a vehicle parked with two people moving around the hood area. We walked up, the guy was messing with fan, getting the power to work for the fan. We talked for a bit, and then he asked us if we would like a L.H.C., after hanging out some more with is girlfriend and him - we said goodbye, we had to beat the rain into Damascus.
The trail seemed to go uphill forever..it really sucked, if not for the long downhill into Damascus.....we might have just said forget it and sleep in the woods. But, there was a downhill...and we arrived at 2am! Ahead of our goal of 4am :-) !
Time for a shower, wash clothes, and relaxe til daybreak. Good night everyone.
