Baroque garden pavilion filled w/frescoes
We were actually able to take photos in the church
Baroque abbey park was designed in 1750
Terrace in front of church w/stunning views
St. Benedict's Path overlooking the Danube
Fertile countryside along Danube surrounds Melk
Huge clock made entirely out of wood
Stairs leading up to impressive formal area
Abbey -one of the world's most famous monasteries
Abbey was the size of the town of Melk below
I loved the symmetry and bright colors
Exhibit honoring the builder of the abbey
Abbey founded in 1089;very nicely made into museum
Unfortunately no photos in phenomenal library
Library-extensive manuscript collection & globes
Abbey easily reached by car, boat or bus
Current buildings mainly from early 1700s
Abbey is at western gateway to Wachau Valley
Imagine the work this took!
One of many colorful ceiling frescoes
Marble Hall ceiling fresco from 1731
Abbey now also has 1000 student school
From terrace looking out over town of Melk
Marble Hall was astonishingly ornate & beautiful
Library contains 750 works from before 1500
Looking into the library which has 100,000 volumes
Abbey is UNESCO World Heritage Site
Complete reconstruction of church done in 1701
High point of the monastery definitely the church
Leitmotif - Glory is found only in the cross
Marble, gold, exquisite paintings-fantastic
How could I not have heard of this before?
Monastery got lights & modern plumbing in 1900
Paul Troger painted virtually all of the frescoes
Would be a great day trip from Vienna
Magnificent main alter in the church
Monastery is still functioning today after 1000yrs
