Didn't see many other tourists	City named for St. Sofia Church (built 565 AD)	Imposing National Palace of Culture was deserted	Horse & buggy passing my Sofia-bound bus
Countryside just wide open spaces	More than 100 casinos in Sofia Comments!	The language is just impossible!	Eagles' Bridge spans what looked like a bayou
Tiny Boyana Church was extremely impressive	Soviet Army Monument in one of many parks	National Assembly; city 1.2 million people	Known for yellow brick roads; but not very yellow
Nevsky Cathedral built to honor Russian soldiers	Nevsky -1912;celebrates Bulgarian independence	Bulgaria's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier	Like Macedonia, country has Coke Light not Zero
National Opera; compact central city	Public transit easy & avoids terrible traffic	Surprised country is already in EU	Explosive growth after named capital in 1878
As with most cities, ugly graffiti is everywhere	Russian Church; I didn't see modern suburbs	Lots of public works projects underway	City's version of Hollywood Walk of Fame Comments!
16th c. Banya Bashi Mosque had tight security	Neoclassical National Theater built early 1900s	1863 Sveta Nedelya Church; had perfect weather	National Art Museum across from scruffy park
Bulgaria's version of Supreme Court	St. George Rotunda surrounded by modern building	Guards wear traditional Bulgarian attire	Largest Sephardic synagogue in Europe
City has huge, modern bus/train station	Road here from Greece was 2 lanes most all way	Catholic Cathedral one of few modern churches	Traffic close to gridlock w/ tons of construction
Bulgaria's monetary unit is Lev -1 is 64 cents	Forest fire not entering 4th day nearby	Boyana had 90 murals dating from 1259	My posh hotel was great & very affordable
Bulgaria Plaza prettier from a distance
