Today we traveled by van to Chinchero. Chinchero is a small town in the Andes. We visited very talented Peruvian weavers. Dalmiro, our tour guide for the week, talked us through the process for weaving Alpaca. 1st, the hair is shaved off the Alpaca. 2nd, it is seperated into threads and boiled for the dying process. Different herbs are used for dying, and amazingly, thirty different shades of each color can be achieved. 3rd, it is spun into string and ready to be weaved into clothing, blankets, and many other items.
After Chinchero, we traveled to the Urubamba Salt Mines, where we learned how the Incas and Peruvians make a variety of different salts.
We stayed at Ararwi, in Urubamba, and learned of the good work that they do.
