Our trip to the states caused both of us to gain some weight from too much of that "super-sized" American food.  Luckily, Russ's family was kind enough to give a Wii Fit system as a gift and, after some initial procrastination, we got it set up on Saturday.  The first order of business to get started on the road to good health and fitness is  for the Wii Fit to do some measurements to calculate your body mass.  You are then categorized in a range from underweight to obese and your little Wii Mii (who looks just like you) expands its waist accordingly.  The category you fall into also determines whether the Wii voice says "oh" or "ugh" when you step on the footpad.  It's all very cute but if you fall into the overweight or obese categories you just want to slap whoever programmed the thing.  For fun sometime, it would be interesting to see how much the little Wii Mii can expand without actually popping and the Wii voice making pig sounds when you step on the footpad.

Once you've been analyzed and humiliated, the system asks you to set some goals for working your way to a BMI of 22.  The goals are totally up to you so we set ours for losing 3 pounds in 2 weeks and moved on to the training program so we could get started shedding those pounds.  We were asked to select a personal trainer, either male or female.  We both chose the female.  She is very encouraging and tolerant of the fact that we are out of shape and somewhat uncoordinated.  She sometimes praises us even when we've done a terrible job of completing the training tasks, however, there was an instance when she asked if I trip over my feet when I walk.  Very funny.  It's true that I ranked as "unbalanced" in all of the balance training exercises.  (It's also true that I trip over my feet when I walk)  But when doing the yoga poses she actually commented on what a great sense of balance I have.  I think there's some programming glitches in this system that need to be looked at.

Our intent is to use the Wii Fit on a daily basis.  Our trainer likes it when we show up everyday and she gets a bit snotty if we miss a session.  The more time you spend in training, the more exercise options the system lets you participate in.  And performance doesn't seem to figure into this feature since I've been given additional balance exercises even though I can't perform above the "unbalanced" level on the ones I've already been given.  We'll keep you updated on our progress.  So far we've each gained a pound which means we now have 4 pounds to lose in a week and a half!  Maybe this isn't going to be as easy as we thought.
