Ten minutes outside of Piriapolis, the little van turned off the road where the hand-painted sign directed us toward the "caves of the Indians." At the end of the dirt track, we left the van and started the climb up the side of Sugar Loaf Mountain. (You can see the mountain at the right of the photo.)
We had returned to Piriapolis because of the glorious views of the mountains and the beaches, and had planned to spend the day learning more about the town. But after a series of half-communications, here we were scrambling our way up the side of Uruguay's highest mountain to see rock paintings by the ancient indigenous people.
Our city clothes made the steep trail and rocks a little more difficult, but then, spontaneity is part of the fun of travel.
