When I left the Rib Lake camp yesterday morning, I headed for Timm's Hill, the highest point in Wisconsin, and enjoyed the beautiful view from the watch tower.  I then discovered a sign pointing to High Point Village nearby and went there.  I sat outside a very nice restaurant and had a cappuccino. Afterwards I had a chat with the hostess, Lyle Blomberg.  I told her about my plans, and she highly recommended driving along Highway 2 to the West Coast.  High Point Village is sheer delight, check it out at www.highpointvillage.com.
My intent was to drive to Copper Falls State Park ands spend a night or two there.  The park is located about 20 miles south of Ashland, and as I approached the area the sky got more and more overcast, and soon it began to rain.  I, therefore, decided, to drive straight to Ashland and to check in at the Hotel Chequamegon (www.hotelc.com) with a fine view of Lake Superior from my third floor room (it's undoubtedly much better on clear days).
Yes, I chickened out after five nights spent in the tent, but I'd rather not catch pneumonia and have to cancel the rest of the trip.  As of 9.30 a.m. it's still raining, so I will head west and perhaps stop in Grand Rapids, Minnesota - whether in a camp or hotel room time will tell.

Pretty country, smart move to get a hotel room instead of a pup tent. Try the Wisconsin kringle in the big oval rounds; prune or apricot are favorites in Racine,
Wisconsin.

Ciao from L.A.
