Chiapa de Corzo is small and pretty and the oldest town in Chiapas.
It dates back to around 1500BC, when the warrior Chiapa tribe established their capital city, Nandalumí, very near to where the town is now. A few years later in 1528, conquistador Diego de Mazariegos and his men invaded the place.
According to local legend the Chiapa preferred to hurl themselves in the Sumidero canyon rather than surrender to the Spaniards.
These days there's not a lot to do in Chiapa de Corzo other than wander around and soak up the provincial atmosphere and cool down (it's very very hot) with a fruit juice on the square, eat tacos and sample the local sweets.
So that's what we did.
