From Capurgana we took a stroll to neighbouring Sapzurro, a small village a couple of hours' walk further up the coast. Sapruzzo is the last Colombian village before Panama, and seems to be inhabited by more army personnel than civilian residents.
The soldiers look a bit scary wandering about with serious-looking machine guns and dressed up in heavy duty army fatigues, but all the ones we met were very friendly, and even kept an eye on our stuff while we went snorkelling in the coral reef off Sapzurro's pretty bay.
I felt a bit sorry for them having to wear all those heavy clothes in that heat. Not a bad place to be posted though, more relaxing than Afghanistan anyway.
We also crossed over into Panama for a quick dip in the waters of the pristine, palm-sheltered bay at La Miel; another pretty little waterside village with a heavily military presence.
Again the soldiers on the Panamanian side were friendly too. Despite an apparent propensity for decapitating plastic dolls and displaying their bandana-ed heads on wooden stakes outside their military base...
