This is turning out to be a long travel day.  Finally we reach our destination, a small city in northern Netherlands called Leeuwarden where Gary's friends live.  We enter the city around 8:00 PM and head to one of Gary's familiar sights, then we begin to look for accommodation.  We think that it won't be difficult to find someone, after all, this isn't a tourist mecca.

Hotel after hotel, motel after motel is full.  Everyone is hungry and cranky.  Gary asks one hotel clerk what's going on and learns that there is a Stephen R. Covey seminar in town and all the accommodations in town are totally locked up.  The only thing to do is to look outside Leeuarden.  Gary pursuades the clerk to phone places out of town and he manages to book two rooms for us in a smaller place called Harlingen on the coast, about a half hour's drive away.  They will hold the room for us for an hour, but there are only 3 rooms left and he won't hold it for us after that if someone else wants it.  We blast out of there quickly and arrive at our hotel in Harlingen just after the hotel kitchen closes, but they make us a quick meal anyway.

I won't say much about Harlingen in this entry - that's in my next entry.

The next day we head back to Leeuarden to see Gary's friends.  They are great people, very hospitable, and she greets us with a hug and cheek kisses (which we accept awkwardly, not being too used to that - but she is very gracious) and then works on dinner.  I don't want to impose on them, but Gary insists that it's ok for us to eat there, and we end up having one of the most memorable meals of the trip.  Everything is very tasty, and we feel perfectly at home.  We feel so comfortable with Gary's friends that I'd love to see them again.  My only photos of Leeuwarden are of this family.

Too soon we have to move on, for today, October 2, we must be in Amsterdam to get our apartment.  If we are late, there is a charge of something like 10 Euros every 15 minutes we are late - I can't remember for sure.  She doen't want to have to sit around waiting for people to show up.  So we part company with warm memories of this visit.
