We can't decide exactly how to get there or what to do along the way, but we want to be in Leeuwarden tonight.  Valkenburg has an old castle where they have started restoration, but it will be a really long process.  We decide to stop briefly to look it over.

The exploration of the Castle doesn't take long - it's been pretty much destroyed, but the more interesting thing here is the caverns.  They cut stone from underground tunnels (is that redundant?) and left large caverns that have been used for centuries by fugitives from wars.  The latest were the Dutch and then the Americans who stayed in there in the second world war.

We can only tour with a guide, and he shows us through many of the main tunnels, by artworks drawn on the walls by people through the ages.  Most were put there after tourists started coming, though, to make an attraction for them.  I don't get any pictures underground.  The spookiest thing for many in the group is when the guide says he is going to find something down a nearby tunnel and he disappears, leaving us in total darkness.  We have already heard by then the story of the people who got lost, their lights ran out, and were found dead in the tunnels with their hands worn bloody.
